Description: |
Emmy award-winning TV drama based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines, set in 1940s Louisiana. Mekhi Phifer stars as Jefferson, an African-American man falsely accused of the murder of a white shopkeeper. In the face of deeply-rooted racial inequality, his (white) defence lawyer puts forward the argument that he is nothing more than an animal who didn't have the sense to know what he was doing. Needless to say, he is nevertheless convicted of the crime, but his godmother Emma (Irma P. Hall) is outraged, and enlists the help of the local school teacher, Grant Wiggins (Don Cheadle) to support the family in their hour of need and instil a sense of dignity into her belittled godson. |
