Description: |
Eight films by the legendary British actor. In 'Car of Dreams' (1935), John Mills stars as a wealthy playboy who falls in love with a poor factory worker (Grete Mosheim), buying her a Rolls Royce as a love token. In 'Forever England' (1935), Mills stars as the young, illegitimate son of a naval officer who heroically and singlehandedly plots the destruction of a German Warship in World War One. In 'The Long Memory' (1952), Mills plays a man freed after a long prison sentence for a crime he did not commit. Once outside, he must decide between revenge or making a new life for himself. In 'The Vicious Circle' (1957), Dr.Howard Mortimer (Mills) finds the German actress he's just met at London Airport, dead in his flat. As he investigates, he's drawn into a deadly world of blackmail and murder. 'Above Us The Waves' (1955), chronicles the British efforts to destroy the German battleship 'Tirpitz' in a Norwegian fjord during WWII. John Mills leads a stalwart British cast in this documentary-style film. In 'Tiger Bay' (1959), Polish seaman Korchinsky (Horst Buchholz) shoots his girlfriend dead in a fit of jealous rage. The murder is witnessed by 12-year-old Gillie (Hayley Mills), who steals the gun in order in order to impress her friends. The police begin investigating the case, asking Gillie a series of questions, but at the same time a bond of silence is growing between the girl and the sailor. Finally, 'This Happy Breed' (1944), is an episodic tale of an average working class family in the interwar years. Narrated by Laurence Olivier and directed by David Lean, the story traces the melodrama caused by illicit affairs, family bereavement, the first ripples of women's liberation and political instability in the country during the General Strike. Adapted from Noel Coward's stage play. |
