Description: |
Triple bill of offbeat comedies by American indie director Hal Hartley. 'Trust' (1990) offers a wry look at teenage life in modern America. When pregnant 17-year-old Maria (Adrienne Shelly) drops out of high school and leaves home, she meets up with a housewife whom she begins to suspect of kidnapping a baby. Then Maria meets Matthew (Martin Donovan), a dangerous-looking electronics wizard who carries a Korean War-issue hand grenade around with him. When Maria's father (John MacKay) suddenly drops down dead, her relationships with her mother (Merritt Nelson) and sister (Edie Falco) enter a new phase. In 'Henry Fool' (1998) the lives of shy dustman Simon Grim (James Urbaniak), his depressed mother (Maria Porter) and his nymphomaniac sister (Parker Posey), are thrown into disarray when Henry Fool (Thomas Jay Ryan), a self-styled intellectual and raging egomaniac, arrives in their home. Henry encourages Simon to express himself through poetry and in doing so unwittingly unleashes a new literary force in the world. But while his protege's obscene verse is met with immediate acclaim, Henry's own literary efforts flounder in obscurity. 'The Girl from Monday' (2005) is a sci-fi comedy set in a future where people are labelled with barcodes and live under the control of the Multi-Media Monopoly. When a girl by the name of Monday (Abracos) appears at the local hospital, Jack (Sage) discovers that he is not in fact from Earth but from the same planet as Monday. Together with a small group of rebels, they attempt to put a stop to the all-powerful corporation and regain control of their own lives. |
