Synopsis: |
On 24 May 2007, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry - now the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform - referred the acquisition by British Sky Broadcasting Group plc of 17.9 per cent of the shares in ITV plc to the Competition Commission for investigation and report. This report provides the full findings of the Competition Commission investigation into this matter and offers suggested remedies to the situation. The report investigates various factors related to the competing interests of both companies, including advertising, the provision of national television news, and sports rights. The Competition Commission concluded that had the acquisition not occurred they would expect ITV to remain independent. They therefore assessed the competitive effects of the acquisition against an independent ITV. The Commission also concluded that BSkyB was likely to exercise its ability to influence ITV's strategy so as to substantially lessen competition and that there was likely to be a substantial lessening of competition arising from a loss of rivalry between ITV and BSkyB in the all-TV market. |
