Description: |
A compendium of four films honouring the career of Anthony Hopkins. In 'Meet Joe Black' (1998) Hopkins plays William Parrish, an ageing media tycoon, who meets death himself, played by Brad Pitt. Parrish is offered a few extra days of life on condition that he allow Black into his home. Death is introduced as Joe Black but things go from black to positively ebony when Joe falls in love with the young Miss Parrish who's engaged to be married to Mr. Parrish's acting deputy. 'In Legends Of The Fall' (1994) we find Hopkins as retired US Cavalry officer Colonel William Ludlow who has left the service in protest at government treatment of the Indian nations. In the remote foothills of the Montana Rockies he builds a ranch to bring up his three sons. When the youngest son Samuel (Henry Thomas) returns from the city with his beautiful fiancée, she attracts the admiration of Alfred and Tristan, his two brothers (Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn). In the Oscar nominated 'The Remains Of The Day' (1993) Hopkins is Stevens - the inscrutable butler at Darlington Hall. As the days pass, housekeeper Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson) and Stevens become close. Adapted by the Merchant-Ivory team from the Kazuo Ishiguro novel. '84 Charing Cross Road' (1987) is the touching story of a love affair conducted entirely by letter between an American woman (Anne Bancroft) in New York City and an antiquarian bookdealer played by Hopkins, in Charing Cross Road, London. Based on Helen Hanff's autobiographical novel. |
