Description: |
Box set featuring five films from the highly influential independent filmmaker, who pioneered the cinema verité style of the French New Wave into American cinema and influenced directors such as Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorcese. 'Shadows' (1959) is a jazz-scored, improvisational depiction of three black youths trying to survive in Manhattan. 'Faces' (1968), follows a day in the life of a bourgeois married couple, during which their fragile relationship falls apart. In 'A Woman Under the Influence' (1974), a working class housewife begins to experience a mental breakdown as a result of the constricted rules of her society. In 'The Killing of a Chinese Bookie' (1976), a small-time gambler loses heavily in a game and is offered a chance to clear his debt by murdering an underworld figure known as 'The Chinese Bookie'. Finally, in 'Opening Night' (1977), an actress finds herself on the brink of a mental breakdown on the opening night of her Broadway play. |
