Synopsis: |
The Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI) is a partnership between Cambridge University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, set up as a limited company. It aims to enhance the competitiveness of the UK economy by undertaking collaborative educational and research initiatives. It received an initial grant of [pound]68 million from the Treasury who then handed oversight to the DTI. CMI was set up in an unconventional way and although some of the departures from normal practice could be justified others, such as the exclusion of the DTI from the initial negotiations, could not. It is too early to say whether CMI will live up to its promise and so the Committee suggest that the institution should be revisited in five years time. |
