Synopsis: |
The Government's energy policy has four key objectives: protecting the environment and addressing climate change issues, including cutting carbondioxide emission levels; energy security; delivering affordable energy; and promoting competitive energy markets. The Government has set a target of securing 10 per cent of Britain's electricity supply from renewable sources by 2010, and aims to double this level by 2020. Following on from an NAO report (HCP 210, session 2004-05) published in February 2005, the Committee's report examines the contribution of renewables to the UK's energy and environmental objectives, the cost of the Renewables Obligation for consumers, and the challenges of delivering the 2010 target. |
